RELAX & UNWIND DECEMBER 2009
Letting the Energy Get "Unstuck"
In recent weeks, we talked about trauma causing energy to stick or freeze in our bodies, causing a multitude of unwanted symptoms. The energy gets "hard" and cannot move, in or out. We also discussed why we freeze the energy in the first place - to escape from the pain caused by the trauma.
To cope with trauma, we "leave" the situation emotionally or mentally, freezing the energy. And if we don't thaw it out, we have difficulty coming back to the same place. Many people report "out of body" experiences during extremely traumatic events. Our emotional "absence" makes the energy running through our bodies go cold. And just like heat melts real ice, we need warm energy to "unfreeze" what has become stuck.
What does it mean to be absent? As humans we are made up of physical, emotional, mental, and physic/intuitive or spiritual stuff. We have different pulse rates - a respiratory rate, heart pulse, and cranial pulse - and finer and more subtle movements and energies. As we move up from the physical to the spiritual, we experience an increase in energy and heat. We move up higher into our emotions, thoughts, and finally to our subconscious (or non-conscious). The energy gets hotter and faster as we move higher. Conversely, things cool down as they go down in level.
When we're "not there" our higher levels of self - emotional, mental and non-conscious - are not there in those places in the body, and therefore the area cools down. The higher and hotter parts of ourselves are no longer there to keep things hot and moving.
How do we thaw out and release that stuck energy in our bodies? We have to return to our true nature. Our fight, flight, or freeze response is hardwired into our instincts. Our bodies know to summon tremendous amounts of energy to either fight or flight. If those don't work, the body instinctively slams on the breaks and freezes. Our natural instinct should also allow us to continue the biological process and thaw out. But thanks to our big brains, we've learned to create fears and faulty beliefs that override our natural instincts. We know what to do but, all too often, we ignore the message of our bodies that would overcome long-term symptoms of trauma. We all do this!!
We will discuss in the next newsletter how to get in touch with the natural guide inside of us who can guide us to complete the biological process and many other interesting things.
In the meantime, take time to become more aware of your physical sensations. When you feel something good, pay attention to where in your body the feeling is coming from. When you're in the shower, pay real close attention to the sensations the water creates as it hits your skin. One of the major keys is feeling. Feelings are a very valuable source of information for us.
